Most hatchbacks in its class are fun and sensible but the new Honda Civic Type R still looks and feels extra. Since 2016 when the 10th generation of the Civic was released, the Honda Civic Type R has been something special but with new competition rising will the few modifications made to this year’s Civic Type R be enough for it to maintain at the top spot as the best hot hatch in 2019?
It has the looks
The 5-door, sport compact 2019 Honda Civic Type R, which is made in Swindon, England; looks remarkably fierce. If the 2019 Honda Civic Type R was an animal then it would be a Simbakubwa (Swahili for ‘big lion’) on crack (you can find the lion in a museum drawer in Kenya).
The 2019 Honda Civic Type R… The ACE is back
Instead of adapting it from an existing model, Honda made the Civic Type R as a performance machine. And everything about the 2019 Honda Civic Type R feels and looks amazing; from the chassis, the suspension, the steering technology, a revised transmission and the fine interior… everything about it is spot on.
At the front of the car you have a new air intake at the bonnet with an air scoop centrally positioned, smoked lenses for the LED headlights and indicators, 20-inch alloy wheels fitted with high performance tyres, a beautiful spoiler and nice peaks at the roof flanks pointing backwards.
For a hatchback the car looks rather big, and you can easily confuse it with a sedan, but it is more accommodative this way.
So the 2019 Honda Civic Type R still looks angry and very sporty but that is one problem that we will come back to later.
Inside the 2019 Honda Civic Type R you will find nice, comfortable, racing bucket seats that offer a nice low driving position. Which kind of reminds me of the Honda S2000, what a car that was! It’s sad they stopped production.
The 2019 Honda Civic Type R now has a red and black interior which well fits this car. It has enough head and knee room at the front and rear.
The infotainment system is nice though there have been complains that it has a slow response. But on the positive we now have an actual volume knob, this was a major complain in the previous model.
Honda has maintained top class safety features which include:
The collision mitigation braking system applies brakes automatically to avoid collision.
Traffic sign recognition
A technology whereby a vehicle is able to recognize the traffic signs put on the road.
Lane departure warning with lane keep assist
Lane keep assist automatically adjusts the steering to keep the car on its lane.
Adaptive cruise control
Maintains constant distance with the car in front by adjusting the car’s speed.
Automatic high beam assistance
This system automatically switches the headlights setting to low beam from high beam when it detects a vehicle ahead.
While the above features come as standard, you can have an option of adding these to your 2019 Honda Civic Type R:
Parking sensors at the front and rear
Dual-zone climate control
Power folding door mirrors
Wireless phone charging
A powerful 11-speaker stereo
Because of this highly efficient safety features, the Honda Civic Type R received a Euro NCAP 5 star crash test rating.
When it comes to high performance the 2019 Honda Civic Type R’s engine has the credentials to back it up. And if you like the performance of the Honda Civic Si, then you will surely love how well the 2019 Honda Civic Type R performs.
The 2019 Honda Civic Type R is still front wheel drive but it handles better than most rear wheel drive cars.
The 2019 Honda Civic Type R has a turbocharged 2-litre inline-4, though it’s the same engine as the one in the 2018 Type R, it produces more power; about 316 hp (235kW) at 6500 rpm. In America however, the horsepower has been cut down to 306 hp.
And with all this power and a body weighing just over 1400 kilos, it can reach a top speed of 169mph (272km/h) and can achieve 0-60mph in just 5.2 sec.
The 2019 Honda Civic Type R returns an MPG of 22 in the city and 28 on the highway.
The 2019 Honda Civic Type R still maintains its 6-speed manual gear shift made of a silver aluminum knob with red coated gear digits.
The turbocharged engine offers amazing performance
It has excellent safety features
The interior is finished with high quality materials
The cabin has plenty of room
The car rides beautifully around corners
Many features come standard with this car
$35,700 feels too much for a Honda Civic
The exterior feels over styled while this is nice for the younger generation of drivers, the price again limits the number of young people who can afford it.
With competitors like the Volkswagen Golf R, the new 2019 Hyundai Veloster N and the Subaru WRX STI, the 2019 Honda Civic Type R follows on where the 2018 Honda Civic Type R left off, with performance that will still give any hot hatch a run for its money.
